Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to an extent that it may have a negative effect on health as a result that gained calories are much more than burned calories in the body. In terms of health, generally acceptable ideal body fat is 18%-26% in men and 25%-31% in women. As a result of excess fat accumulation, it causes many diseases in patients and increases the risk of some cancer types. Obesity shortens lifetime approximately 9 years in women and 12 years in men. Still, 30% of world population is obese. Obesity disease is ranked second after smoking within preventable causes of death in the world. Frequency of obesity has increased to 34% in women and 107% in men in our country. Obesity has doubled in 28 years in the world and has affected 205 million men and 297 million women. More than 30 percent of the world population which is equal to 2.1 million people are overweight or obese, and it is possible that this percentage increased to 50 percent by 2030. According to the report declared by World Health Organization in 2017, Turkey is ranked 4th in the world and 1st in Europe for obesity. According to Turkish Dietetic Association, an obese person expenses 25 percent more than a normal healthy person. The most ideal treatment for obesity is to lose weight with sport through guidance of our dietitian. However, bariatric surgery is the most successful treatment with permanent solution for obesity.
